The second game we... we played was dalgona. We had to pick one out of the four shapes they showed us.

Dalgona (뽑기 Ppopgi?), also known as Sugar Honeycombs, was the 2nd game in the 33rd Squid Game held in 2020. In the game, contestants were tasked with using a needle to carve a shape out of a piece of dalgona without cracking the honeycomb. Players who broke their honeycombs or did not finish in time were eliminated from the game and executed by guards.
187 players participated in this game. 79 players (around 42.2%) were eliminated and 108 players (around 57.8%) progressed to the next round. At this point in the competition, 348 players in total were eliminated. Notable eliminations include Player 061, Player 119, Player 209, and Player 369.
This game took place on June 26, 2020.
Game Information[]
In Dalgona, contestants were told to choose a cookie shape to carve out before being informed of the game's premise. The options were a circle, a triangle, a star and umbrella. No butch
After selecting a shape, they were handed small metal containers. Inside, they found the shapes they chose drawn on the sugar honeycombs along with a small needle.
The rules were to carve the shape out of the honeycomb without breaking it before the time ran out. Breaking/cracking the honeycomb or not carving it out in time resulted in being shot dead by a soldier.
Shapes[]
- Triangle: This is the easiest shape. It only has three lines and most players will be able to cut them out easily.
- Circle: This is a medium difficulty shape. All players have to do is break it into pieces.
- Star: This shape is hard because it also has a lot of lines. When you cut it out normally, it breaks most of the time.
- Umbrella: This is an extremely difficult shape because of many lines and angles. The part of handle is very thin and delicate, making it easy to break.
- Nightmare Triangle (only appeared in Seong Gi-hun's nightmare): A complex version of Triangle (called Mona Lisa by the community), which is impossible to complete.
- Keyhole (only appeared in Cho Sang-woo's recollection)

Byeong-gi - The organ harvesting guards told him the next game was Dalgona, making him pick the triangle shape.
Cho Sang-woo - Was told by Sae-Byeok that she saw the guards melting sugar, which reminded him of Dalgona and made him pick the triangle shape.
Kang Sae-Byeok - Snuck inside the vents in the bathroom to see the guards cooking the Honeycombs and followed Sang-woo, taking the same shape as him.
Han Mi-Nyeo and Jang Deok-su - Han Mi-Nyeo secretly used a heated lighter to heat the needle which made her pass with the star shape, she assisted Deok-su by dropping her lighter to him.
Player Techniques[]
Although they were told they needed to carve out the shape, they were never told that they had to use the needle included. Most of the players assumed they had to use the conventional method, but a couple of participants got creative.
Licking the honeycomb[]

Player 456, Seong Gi-hun, chose the Umbrella shape prior to the second game's beginning. This was remarkably the hardest shape to carve out, and thus he found himself at a disadvantage.
Nearing the game's end, Gi-hun noticed a change in the honeycomb's color where his sweat had fallen, after holding it up to the light he realized it was slowly melting. After this discovery, Gi-hun began licking the honeycomb, melting its thinnest part, and ultimately taking out the shape smoothly. Player 278 noticed him, then everyone started to replicate his own method, including Oh Il-nam, who later on thanked him for indirectly saving his life.
Using a heated needle[]

Player 212, Han Mi-nyeo, chose the star shape, the second hardest shape to carve out, proven by Oh Il-nam's initial struggle. Nonetheless, Mi-nyeo smuggled a lighter before the Squid Game was restarted, and was able to use it to heat the tip of the needle, making it much easier for her to carve the star out of the honeycomb. Later she lent her lighter to Jang Deok-su, who had also chosen the star shape, in order to prove herself as useful and to gain his alliance for upcoming games.
Trivia[]
- In Cho Sang-woo's recollection, in addition to the four shapes that appeared in the game, there was also a keyhole-shaped dalgona. Which was a combination of the Circle and Triangle-shaped Dalgona.
- The game briefly appears in a nightmare Seong Gi-hun had in "Six Legs". Gi-hun enters the game and opens a tin to find a shape similar to the sierpinski triangle inside it, meaning that all the contestants die and the money will be donated to rich billionaires.
- When actors HoYeon Jung, Anupam Tripathi, Heo Sung-tae, Kim Joo-ryoung and Lee Yoo-mi attempted to do a similar challenge, all of them failed.
- Dalgona is involved in a South Korean activity where one must remove the shape that is implemented on the candy, without breaking it. Often, vendors will allow you to have another, if you can successfully remove the shape.
- The Manager is the first non-player to be killed in Dalgona for taking off his mask.
- Seong Gi-hun is the last contestant who finished this game in 2020, completing it a second before the timer ran out.
- In the Latin-American Spanish dub, the game is called "Panal" (Honeycomb) in Season 1, but when Gi-hun tells the other players in Season 2 what the second game will be, he calls the game "Dalgona".
