Development[]
In late October 2021, Hwang stated he was in discussions with Netflix regarding a second season.[18] Hwang confirmed that he had begun conceptualization work on a second season during a press event in November 2021, with plans to bring back Lee Jung-jae to reprise his role of Seong Gi-hun.[10] Netflix eventually revealed that they had not yet officially greenlit a second season, but were in discussions with Hwang towards one.[19] Eventually, at an earnings call in January 2022, Sarandos said when asked about a second season "Absolutely...the Squid Game universe has just begun".[20] Hwang then said in April 2022 that he anticipated that the second season would be completed and broadcast by 2024.[21] Netflix eventually confirmed that the second season was greenlit by June 2022.[22]
On November 12, 2024, Hwang Dong-hyuk teased that this season has new games, a (mostly) new cast with a dystopic vision that now feels frighteningly close to home by posing the question “Is the majority always right?”[23] In addition, viewers can expect at least one game "that's already been played in season 1 to make a return this season. But the newer games, he promised would be greater in scale, more intriguing than ever, and they are going to just take you on a wild, emotional rollercoaster.[24] One such twist this season is voting, since the contestants in this latest round of murderous children’s games are handed a vote after each challenge to decide whether they want to discontinue or to carry on and accrue more money.[25]
On November 22, 2024 Hwang Dong-hyuk admitted that he is well aware that the real world has not gotten any better since the debut of the show back in 2021, and he’s made sure that the second season is going to reflect that... Stating that: “It’s not getting better out there — it’s getting worse […] Worse climate change, more wars, more people dying. Compare the world [in 2021] and now — our lives are not improving... What we’ve created on Season 2 is a deeper, more advanced story” than the first. Thus, he teased that this season is much more cruel, scarier and more gruesome than the first.[26]
On November 26, 2024, Netflix unveiled the main trailer along with some key art titled ‘Round and Round’ to promote the second season.[27] By December 4, 2024, it was announced that season 2 of Squid Game consists of 7 episodes, with longer runtimes. The longer episodes allow for deeper exploration, character development, and complex subplots as well.[28]
On December 3, it was revealed that to date, Squid Game Season 1 has drawn an audience of 330 million and more than 2.8 billion hours viewed since its release on Sept. 17, 2021. Netflix touts the Korean-language show as its most anticipated title of the year and cited a 60% spike in Season 1 viewership following the release for the first Season 2 teaser on Oct. 31.[29]
On December 4, 2024, a new Squid Game collection which includes the Puma brand with the series' iconic uniforms brought to life was unveiled.[30]
On December 9, 2024, the second season had its premiere in Seoul and another premiere on December 12 which included a not-quite-5K race in Los Angeles, California.[31]
Prior to release, the show attracted controversy for casting male actor Park Sung-hoon to play the transgender woman character Hyun-Ju, due to some wanting a trans person to authentically portray their experiences. Some argued in response to these criticisms that trying to put a trans person in the spotlight in South Korea was not reasonable. People also opined that having a trans character in a South Korean series at all is an important step in representation. On December 18, 2024, during press day for Squid Game 2, director and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke to a group of journalists, about why he wanted to include a trans character this time around.: “The people who come to join the games in Squid Game are usually marginalized or neglected from society, and not just financially speaking, but people who would belong to marginalized groups,” Hwang explained through a translator. “In season one, the representative character for that was Ali, who was a foreigner working in Korea, which is one of the most representative minority groups in Korea. Currently today, unfortunately, in the Korean society the gender minority is a group that is not as accepted widely within society. I wanted to create a character that would represent that... Hwang said acceptance of trans people has gotten better recently, but it’s still not where it needs to be. “In Korea, when you are a gender minority, it is not as widely accepted yet, unfortunately, and you are still seen to be very much out of the norm,” he said. “And so by creating a character like Hyun-ju, through her choices, her actions, and the way she carries herself in the game, I hope that that could raise awareness of these issues that we face today.”[32]
On December 19, 2024, Hwang Dong-hyuk originally envisioned seasons 2 and 3 as a single story because that's how he wrote it. But in the end it would have been too many episodes. So instead, he opted to split the story in half.[33]
On December 28, 2024, it was revealed that this season was filmed in stunning locations in South Korea, such as Incheon International Airport, Daejeon Expo Science Park, and Seongapdo Island.[34]
On January 20, 2025, a BTS video for the season was released by Netflix.[35]
On February 2, 2025, T.O.P began promotion for the series after his character of Thanos became a fan favorite with international audiences alike.[36]

- On November 12, 2024 Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that he lost several teeth while filming the first season, but that despite the hit to his health, he added that he decided to come back to film a second season due to “money,” noting that he “didn’t make much” from the first season despite it being “a huge global success”. This is because he had received his payment upfront before the release of the series, so he wasn't able to fully cash in on the approximately $800 million it made for Netflix.[39]
- On November 25, 2024, it was mentioned how a court in the Northern District of California issued a subpoena to Discord to identify the user behind a big leak of Netflix content in August 2024 on the social platform Discord because Netflix is trying to track down who the culprit behind the aforementioned leak was.[40]
- On November 27, 2024, some eagle-eyed fans noticed that in the latest trailer for the series as Player 230 cranks back his arm to punch another player, his nail polish is visible. There is a similarity between T.O.P's nails and the nail polish recently worn by BIGBANG's G-Dragon at the 2024 MAMA Awards in Osaka, Japan.[41]
- On December 10, 2024, the season was nominated on Monday Dec. 9, 2024 for Best Television Drama at the upcoming 82nd Golden Globes in early January 2025 ahead of the season premiere.[42]
- Also on this day Duolingo and Netflix announced the launch of their "Learn Korean or Else" campaign on Tuesday. - On December 12, 2024, it was revealed that this season, Gi-hun is no longer his fun-loving, optimistic self from its first season.[44]

The infamous Squid Game guards would be roaming the stadium in their pink hooded jumpsuits for photo opportunities and a giant blimp of the Young-hee doll - featured in the ‘Red Light, Green Light’ game would be appearing outside the stadium pre-match.[45]
- Also on this day, a marketing campaign with McDonald's Australia where the exclusive Squid Game Meal includes a QR code that grants access to the game, where players race against time to complete the dalgona Candy Challenge was announced. In a unique Australian twist, McDonald's has replaced the umbrella candy shape with a more challenging Golden Arches 'M'. Those who succeed will have the chance to win exclusive co-branded merchandise, with a grand prize of $100,000 for one challenger.[46]
- On December 19, 2024, Squid Game: The Experience, an immersive entertainment installation that opened in October in a shuttered shopping mall near Madison Square Garden and Squid Game: Unleashed, a mobile video game were announced to coincide with this Season.[47]

- Also on this day, it was announced that Season 2 is now ranked #1 in all 93 countries on the global charts; thus marking it as the first Netflix show to ever achieve this impressive feat.[50]
- On December 28, 2024, Hwang Dong-hyuk praised T.O.P. for his performance as the disgraced rapper Thanos after the actor was previously blacklisted from Korean entertainment following his 2017 guilty plea to marijuana usage. The Squid Game director stated how he “[felt] that it took him a lot of guts, in a way, to portray a character, especially someone who shares a lot of similarities that are quite negative to him as a person too... So I think it took him a lot of courage to take on that role... Despite the long hiatus, I have to say, as a director, he performed very impressively and I’m very satisfied with what he did with the character”.[51]
- On December 29, 2024 Park Sung-hoon faced controversy after sharing a parody Japanese Adult Video cover of his show 'Squid Game' on his social media, only to delete it swiftly. A representative from his agency, BH Entertainment went onto say “Park Sung Hoon received an overwhelming number of direct messages (DMs) on his social media. While checking the DMs, he accidentally uploaded the image. The actor himself was deeply shocked and feels extremely sorry for making such a mistake, especially in these circumstances. He will be more careful in the future to ensure this does not happen again.”[52]

- On January 8, 2025, Eagle-eyed fans have spotted a major filming blunder in Friend or Foe, the season finale where the camera changes angle to show Gi-hun and his allies opening fire on the guards. In the background, at approximately 22.39, a cameraman can clearly be seen at the top right of the screen.[55]
- On January 9, 2025, it was reported about an image that has been circulating on social media that looks a bit like what Kevin Feige would unveil at Comic-Con for the MCU, showing off an alleged timeline for the SGCU (i.e. Squid Games Cinematic Universe). This includes Squid Game 3, Squid Game 1987, Squid Game USA, Squid Game 28th, and Squid Game World, seemingly all coming to Netflix between now and Winter 2028. However, this was proven false.[56]
- On January 15, 2025, T.O.P gave his first interview since 2014, where he admitted to The Korea Times that the role of Thanos struck an uncomfortable chord because in many ways the character mirrored my past, reflecting aspects he'd rather keep hidden. As well as the fear of being pigeonholed into one role made me hesitate...[57]
- On January 20, 2025, HiteJinro's flagship soju brand, JINRO (Korean name 'Chamisul') teamed up with Squid Game for a unique collaboration featuring exclusive themed merchandise and specially designed limited editions. As part of the collaboration, JINRO will offer limited edition Squid Game-themed soju bottles. With creative label designs will feature beloved characters like Young-hee, the Pink Guards, and the Front Man alongside JINRO's signature dew-drop logo. The label's Korean letters "ㅁ, ㅇ, ㅅ" are accented in Squid Game's signature pink color, symbolizing the guards' shapes: circle, triangle, and square. Lastly, HiteJinro is also releasing a Young-hee drinking game device: A rotating Young-hee head, reminiscent of the "Red Light, Green Light" game, adds a playful twist to drinking games...[58]
- On January 27, 2025 Park Sung-hoon knew there would be pressure placed on him after taking on the role of Cho Hyun-ju, a trans woman featured this season. In order to prepare for the role, Park, who previously played openly gay characters in productions of The Pride and Two Weddings and a Funeral, consulted transgender people to learn from their experiences. Park adds that “I really hope that Hyun-ju will play a part in maybe getting rid of some of those biases. I hope that people who belong in those communities will no longer feel discriminated against or experience disadvantages within society. I hope that everyone can be true to who they really are and feel confident in doing so.”[59]
- On January 28, 2025, T.O.P sat down for a one-on-one to dive with Netflix into all things Thanos. Such as how was his character conceived? What is his reaction to the surprising love (and hate) that Thanos had inspired?[60]
