Red Light, Green Light (무궁화 꽃이 피었습니다 Mugunghwa-kkochi Pieossseubnida?, roughly translates to "The Flower of Sharon has bloomed") was the first game of the 33rd Squid Game held in 2020.

The goal of this game was for players to successfully reach the other end of an enclosed field, where a large robotic doll (Based after a 1970-1980s children's book character) was positioned, within the five-minute time limit. Players were permitted to move when the doll called "green light", but if the doll shouted "red light", players were to remain stationary while the doll scanned their movements. Any player caught moving was eliminated and shot dead.

Out of the 456 players who entered this game, 255 players who moved were eliminated, and the remaining 201 players progressed to the next round.

Game Exterior

Red Light, Green Light takes place in an open-roofed rectangular room with wallpapers resembling a blue sky and houses in a sandy terrain. There is a tall, mechanical doll (resembling a little girl) standing at one end with a dead tree behind it and two circle-masked guards standing beside it. On the walls, there are rectangular holes where guns will stick out and fire at players who fail to complete the game. And they will die causing elimination from the games. The other end has multiple doors, with the wallpaper being houses and the doors as the entrance to them. This is where players are released into the game. There are also four rectangular sheets of unknown material, with foliage covering it, to seal the top of the room after the game ends.

Within five minutes, players must cross the red finish line without getting caught making even the slightest movements by the mechanical doll. The player can move if the doll says "Green Light" and stop when it says "Red Light". If a player moves when the doll turns around or does not cross the finish line within the given time limit, they will automatically get shot and eliminated from the game. Many people were scared.

In the Korean dub, players are allowed to move while the doll says (무궁화 꽃이 피었습니다 Mugunghwa-kkochi Pieossseubnida?, roughly translates to "The Flower of Sharon has bloomed"), and stop once the sentence is finished.

Original Game

The game involves a player standing at the end of the field as the "Curator". The others will stand at the back of the field and move front while they are not caught by the curator. A player caught moving will be sent back to the beginning or eliminated from the round.

  • Further into the game, there are a few player numbers which repeat, despite having been shot in this game. This might be a filming error, but also might be due to the massive amount of people running away.
  • In the German dub of the episode the Game is played differently, people have to run while "red light, green light" is said. This is most likely a script error.
  • It is the same room being used during Squid Game, the final game in the series.
    • Unlike the aforementioned game, there are no windows for The VIPs to view the game.
