Player 040 after the Special Game in "Stick to the Team"
Player 040 or Lee Gyong-Hui [2] was a contestant in the 33rd Squid Game in 2020. He was one of the first members of Jang Deok-su's gang and remained loyal to him throughout the competition.
History[]
Player 040 enters the deadly competition due to heavy debt. Like many participants, he hopes to win the substantial cash prize to turn his life around. Player 040 wakes up in a large room with 455 other contestants. He witnesses the chaotic atmosphere, including a fight between Jang Deok-su and Kang Sae-byeok, which sets the tone for the intense dynamics among players. After the fight is broken up, he was welcomed by the staff. After that, he signs a contract agreeing to the rules of the game and has his photo taken.
Player 040 survives red light green light. The trauma from the deaths around him deeply affects the players, leading to a vote on whether to continue the games. it’s unknown what he voted though, the narrowly majority decided to terminate the games and he along with other players were sent back to their hometowns, but he ultimately decides to return with 186 other players after some decide to continue. Upon returning, Player 040 aligns himself with Jang Deok-su’s team, which gives him a stronger position in the games. His choice to join a more aggressive team reflects his strategic approach to survival.
During the Sugar Honeycombs challenge, Player 040 struggles to carve out his star. However, he notices Seong Gi-hun successfully licking his umbrella to make the process easier and copies his method. He manages to carve his shape just before time runs out, showcasing his adaptability under pressure. After that, he, Jang Deok-su, and his gang cut in the line and received meals twice. In the Special Game. He managed to get a hold on Kang Sae-byeok by suffocating her. She managed to escape from 040's hold. He and Jang Deok-su’s gang managed to survive the Special Game that occurred.
Player 040 participates in the Tug of War challenge alongside Jang Deok-su's team. Jang Deok-su’s team managed to survive the third game by killing Team Seven. The preparation includes playful moments, such as a lighthearted fight with Player 303 using metal bars, which contrasts with the otherwise grim setting. Jang Deok-su later tells them to rest instead of preparing for an impending conflict, which reflects the camaraderie among the players. Player 040 was the first one keep watch for his teammates during night. Jang Deok-su couldn't sleep so he offered to watch for his teammates. Player 040 told his leader to rest up as he promised to keep them safe. Jang Deok-su thanked Player 040 for having their backs.
During the night, an alarm wakes all players, signaling a disturbance. Player 040 note that another player, Byeong-gi, has not returned from the bathroom. Before the marble game, Player 040 teams up with Player 303.
Death[]
For the marble game, Player 040 teams up with Player 303. The rules of this game require players to compete against their partners, adding a layer of emotional tension and trust to the competition. As the game progresses, Player 040 replaced Player 303 with Player 126. Around the last seven minutes of the game, Player 040 loses all of his marbles to Player 126. After losing, Player 040 is shot by one of the guards as per the rules of the game.

- Standing at a height of 6'1.5", he's one of the show's tallest characters.
- In the behind the scenes, Player 040 picked Player 126 as his replacement partner.
Mistakes[]
- In "Stick to the Team", his icon is seen as a different person. This is most likely a continuity error made by Hwang Dong-hyuk.
- Player 040's icon is the same as Player 320's icon.
- Kim Yea-han seems to share the exact same player icon as Player 040 and Player 320, two players in the 33rd Squid Game.

Player 040 was portrayed by Yoon Young-kyun. Despite the fact that his player number is clearly visible, he is credited as "Deok-su's Gang Member 3".
