O X is the 6th episode in Season 2 of the Netflix TV series Squid Game. It is the 15th episode of the series overall.

Synopsis[]

Jun-ho and his team prepare to infiltrate a suspicious island. As monetary stakes and tensions rise, players split into two opposing factions.

Plot[]

The first round of Mingle begins with the song Round and Round playing as the carousel spins. Suddenly, the carousel and the music stop and the Announcer announces that there will be 10 players per room. Time begins to run and fuss ensues while the players try to form groups, Seong Gi-hun quickly decides that he and his team (Hwang In-ho, Park Jung-bae, Kang Dae-ho and Kim Jun-hee) will join Cho Hyun-ju and her team (Park Yong-sik, Jang Geum-ja and Kim Young-mi). Gi-hun asks Hyun-ju how many they are, she tells him they're 4 and Jung-bae says then they're 9, Player 050 asks Gi-hun's team if they're 5, he tells them that he and his group are also 5 and to come with them, but Player 313 tells 050 that he and his group are also 5 and they take them with them. In-ho tells Gi-hun that they must leave and that they are running out of time, Hyun-ju sees Seon-nyeo alone, she grabs her and the team is already of 10. Gi-hun tells the team to run to Room 44, which has a green door, In-ho opens the door, the team enters the room and In-ho closes the door with 1 second left. Gi-hun looks through the peephole in the door to see the Pink Guards eliminating the players who did not find a group, reducing the players remaining from 255 to 220.

Gi-hun shows sorrow for the eliminated players while In-ho observes him. Seon-nyeo arrogantly proclaims that they all survived because of her, before noticing that Jun-hee is pregnant. Gi-hun observes at the nasty woman behavior, then Seon-nyeo says that Gi-hun's was in the games for some reason before turning to look at Jun-hee. Outside, Player 043 is left alive after being shot. Soldiers 005 and 007, Kang No-eul stands behind them, but turns away, deciding to not get involved like she had been before, the Workers come in to put the corpses of the eliminated players in boxes and 2 of them mark 043's box with a "†" for the organ harvesting.

The second round begins and Thanos and Nam-gyu dance to the music, then the carousel and the music stop and it's announced to be 4 players per room. Thanos quickly thinks about which members of his team to choose and chooses Nam-gyu, Park Min-su and Se-mi, Thanos kicks Gyeong-su and yells at the team to run, Thanos and Nam-gyu run while Min-su worries about Gyeong-su but Se-mi grabs his arm and they run, Hyun-ju, Yong-sik, Geum-ja and Young-mi decide to go together and leave Seon-nyeo alone. Gi-hun tells his team to go together but In-ho tells him to go with them and he proceeds to look for 3 players while the team runs to a room. Thanos' team makes it to Room 41 and closes the door, Hyun-ju's team makes it to Room 26 and closes the door, Gi-hun's team makes it to Room 09 and Gi-hun sees if In-ho managed to find people, everything turns a madness while players try to enter a room and push each other to get in, Park Gyeong-seok and Player 071 try to find 2 players and luckily Lee Myung-gi and Player 154 run up to them and join them, but Gi-hun doesn't see In-ho, he enters the room and closes the door before time runs out.

Min-su, worried, asks Nam-gyu what happened to Gyeong-su, Nam-gyu, angry, punches Min-su in the chest and tells him that if he talks to him again as if he were his friend, he will be the next to die. Then Thanos (after the drug wears off) asks the team where Gyeong-su is, suddenly shots start to be heard and Thanos realizes that Gyeong-su stayed outside, Thanos pushes Nam-gyu away, looks through the peephole and screams in horror, regretting leaving him alone. Gyeong-su is shot in the chest and is eliminated. In Room 33, 313 checks to see if any guards are coming to the room, but none come and he tells Players 050 and 238 that they didn't notice that there are only 3 of them, the Managers check the cameras in the rooms and one of them realizes that there are only 3 of them, the Manager informs a Soldier and he shoots the 3 players, eliminating them and passing from 220 players to 168.

The players leave the rooms and go back up to the platform. Min-su steps in a pool of blood and he's paralyzed by the fear of dying, but Thanos calls him and Min-su returns to reality, No-eul sees Gyeong-seok leave Room 04 and she is relieved to see that he managed to survive, Hyun-ju's team sees that Seon-nyeo managed to survive by joining Park Mi-hwa, Player 220 and Player 306 and she gives them a threatening look, especially Young-mi, the team ignores her and goes back up to the platform. Gi-hun's team calls In-ho, In-ho appears and the team is happy and relieved to see that he's alive, Gi-hun tells him that he's happy that he's okay and In-ho tells him that he's a likeable person, so he's good at that kind of games, In-ho asks about Jun-hee's wellbeing and she responds gratefully that he's still here, then In-ho makes a lighthearted joke about them not needing anyone else if the next number is 6, referring to Jun-hee's unborn baby, making everyone laugh while Myung-gi watches them from a distance, relieved that Jun-hee managed to survive.

The players climb back onto the platform and the third round begins, the carousel starts to spin and the music plays, then the carousel and the music stop and it's announced to be 3 players per room. Hyun-ju's team decides to split up into pairs (being Hyun-ju with Young-mi and Yong-sik with Geum-ja) and look for 1 more player. Nam-gyu asks Thanos if he would choose Min-su or Se-mi and Thanos tells them to play Rock paper scissors to choose who comes with them, Se-mi tells Min-su to come with her and extends her hand, but Min-su panics due to the pressure of the moment and extends 2 fingers, making it look like scissors against paper, Thanos and Nam-gyu tell Min-su that he won and take him with them, leaving Se-mi alone while she and Min-su are shocked by what happened. Gi-hun and In-ho tell Jung-bae, Dae-ho and Jun-hee to go they 3 together and the 2 men proceed to look for 1 more player. Hyun-ju and Young-mi look for 1 more player while Yong-sik and Geum-ja also try to find 1 more player, but then Players 172 and 220 grab Yong-sik and take him with them to save themselves, Yong-sik tries to free himself and go to his mother while she watches in horror, but 172 and 220 bring Yong-sik into Room 15 along with them, Geum-ja freezes in horror and resigns herself to die, but luckily Gi-hun and In-ho appear, the 2 men grab the old woman and the 3 players manage to reach Room 17 just in time, saving themselves from dying.

Yong-sik looks through the peephole if his mother stayed outside while the soldiers start shooting at the players who stayed outside to eliminate them, passing from 168 players to 141. Gi-hun asks Geum-ja if she's okay, she tells him that yes and thanks the 2 men for saving her life, In-ho asks the old woman where her son went and she lies that she lost sight of him in the fuss, In-ho asks her if he didn't look for her and Geum-ja thinks that he may be implying that her son abandoned her on purpose, the old woman gets angry and she tells In-ho that Yong-sik would not be able to abandon her, that he's a good man in his heart and that others have taken advantage of him but he has never taken advantage of anyone in his entire life, so she tells him to be careful what he is saying about her son, In-ho apologizes and tells the old woman that he didn't mean to be rude.

The players leave the rooms and go back up to the platform, Thanos, Nam-gyu and Min-su leave Room 35 and Min-su sighs with relief that Se-mi managed to save herself by joining Players 400 and 418 and entering Room 30. They look at each other before Se-mi walks towards the platform and Min-su feels guilty for leaving her alone. Gi-hun, In-ho and Geum-ja meet Hyun-ju and Young-mi and the old woman is happy to see that they're okay, she asks the girls if they're not hurt to which Hyun-ju says no, then Gyeong-seok arrives and Hyun-ju tell Geum-ja that he saved their lives, Young-mi adds that time was running out when Gyeong-seok showed up just like Prince Charming. Geum-ja thanks Gyeong-seok and tells him that he's a prince, Gyeong-seok tells him that it's nothing and that the girls saved his life. Then Hyun-ju asks Geum-ja where Yong-sik is and Yong-sik appears, Geum-ja goes with him and Yong-sik apologizes to his mother for leaving her alone and breaks down crying, but the old woman hugs her son, tells him that she is alive and forgives him, the others see them when Jung-bae, Dae-ho and Jun-hee arrive, the trio see the mother and son and Dae-ho asks what happened.

Yong-sik and Geum-ja hold hands tightly and the fourth round begins, the carousel starts to spin and the music plays, then the carousel and the music stop and it's announced to be 6 players per room. Gi-hun tells Dae-ho, Jun-hee, Hyun-ju, Yong-sik, Geum-ja and Young-mi to go together while he, In-ho, Jung-bae and Gyeong-seok search for 2 players and manage to find them. Dae-ho's team makes it to Room 02 but discovers that Im Jeong-dae, Kim Yeong-sam, Player 023, Player 285, Player 376 and Player 428 are inside. They push them out and close the door. Fortunately Hyun-ju discovers that Room 06 is empty and the team runs to it, but as they run, Young-mi is pushed by Player 051 while he and Player 073 are kicked out of Room 04 by Player 249 and she falls to the floor. Hyun-ju realizes that Young-mi is missing and asks where is she, Young-mi asks for help while she trying to get up and Hyun-ju tries to get out to save her, but then Myung-gi pushes her inside the room, he enters and closes the door with 1 second left, leaving Young-mi outside but saving the group by joining them.

Myung-gi turns to look at the team and Jun-hee realizes that he saved her life, Young-mi stands in front of the door crying and Hyun-ju tries to open it, but then the soldiers start shooting at the players who stayed outside and Young-mi is shot in the back, eliminating her and passing from 141 players to 126. Hyun-ju begins to scream in pain for Young-mi's death, the team is mourns her death and Jun-hee looks at Myung-gi (who regrets that he had to leave Young-mi outside). Hyun-ju grabs Myung-gi and tells him that it's his fault, Myung-gi tells her that it isn't his fault and that if it weren't for him, she would be dead too, Hyun-ju yells at him that Young-mi's death is his fault because she believes she could've saved her and Myung-gi yells at her that there was no time and that she would have died along with everyone else because there wouldn't be enough people. Myung-gi makes Hyun-ju let go of him, he yells at her that everyone is alive thanks to him and asks the others if it he's not right, Jun-hee says that what Myung-gi says is right and Dae-ho says that it's true and that there wasn't enough time.

The players leave the rooms and return to the platform. Myung-gi thanks Jun-hee for supporting him, but she tells him that she only did it because he was right. Gi-hun's team managed to survive by joining Players 328 and 350 and entering Room 34.

The fifth and final round begins, the carousel starts to spin and the music plays, Jung-bae asks Gi-hun what number he thinks it will be, then In-ho tells him that he thinks the number will be 2 because there are 126 players left and there are 50 rooms, so there is enough rooms for 100 players, forming teams of 2, which means that the other 26 will be killed, Gi-hun starts to suspect something upon hearing In-ho's words, but then the carousel and the music stop and it's announced to be 2 players per room. All players rush to grab someone and get to a room, In-ho grabs Jung-bae, Yong-sik grabs Geum-ja, Myung-gi grabs Jun-hee, Dae-ho grabs Gi-hun and Gyeong-seok grabs Hyun-ju. Thanos thinks for a second which of his companions to choose, he grabs Nam-gyu and they run, leaving Min-su alone, fortunately Min-su manages to make team with Seon Han-nam and they run.

The players fight against each other to survive and everything becomes chaos, In-ho and Jung-bae run towards a room but Jung-bae is knocked down, In-ho sees that and tells Jung-bae to get up. Yong-sik, Geum-ja, Dae-ho, Gi-hun, Jeong-dae, Yeong-sam, Seon-nyeo, Mi-hwa, Myung-gi, Jun-hee, Gyeong-seok, Hyun-ju, Min-su and Han-nam run as fast as they can to reach a room and save themselves and Jung-bae manages to get up.

Players 251 and 279 compete against Thanos and Nam-gyu to reach Room 40, Thanos and Nam-gyu throw 251 and 279 to the floor, enter the room and close the door. Myung-gi and Jun-hee arrive at Room 34 and close the door, Gyeong-seok and Hyun-ju arrive at Room 32 and close the door, leaving Players 012 and 051 outside, Yong-sik and Geum-ja arrive at Room 38 and close the door, Dae-ho and Gi-hun arrive at Room 37 and close the door. In-ho grabs 285 as he tries to enter Room 33 and takes him out of the room, In-ho tells Jung-bae to get in and throws 285 to the floor. Upon entering, Jung-bae sees that Sim Jae-seok is inside the room, In-ho enters the room, sees Jae-seok and tells him to get out, but Jae-seok declares that he and 285 had arrived first. In-ho grabs Jae-seok, puts him against a corner and starts strangling him, 285 tries to enter and starts yelling obscenities, demanding that In-ho and Jung-bae open the door and declaring that he arrived first while Jung-bae holds the door closed to left him outside and apologizes for having to do it. With 2 seconds left, In-ho breaks Jae-seok's neck, killing him and leaving only 2 players in the room. Time runs out, it's announced that the third game is over and the players who stayed outside are eliminated, passing from 126 players to 100, Jung-bae is horrified and shocked by what In-ho did to Jae-seok and In-ho turns to look at him after committing the atrocity.

The corpses of eliminated players are taken to the incinerator and some are used for organ harvesting. On the stairs, Gi-hun tells In-ho that when they get to the Dormitory, they should count how many players are left to see how many voted for the "X" and how many voted for the "O" to see who has an advantage for the next vote. On the boat, Hwang Jun-ho, Choi Woo-seok, Sea Captain Park and their group search an island with the help of a drone.

In the Dormitory, Min-su sees Se-mi and starts thinking about her when Thanos and Nam-gyu arrive. Thanos tells Min-su that he was worried about him and Nam-gyu mentions when he beat Se-mi in rock, paper, scissors and they tell him to play one more game but Min-su can only think about Se-mi.

Myung-gi takes Jun-hee to a corner to talk and he tells her that he wants to be with her when they go out. Jun-hee asks him why to which Myung-gi tells her to give him a chance to be a good father to the baby and a good man to her, Myung-gi mentions that he counted how many people are left and it would be ₩300,000,000 or ₩400,000,000 for each one, which is enough for many people to want to leave and they can win the vote. Jun-hee asks him what he plans to do if they leave to which Myung-gi tells her that they will use their shares of the prize to pay their debts and he will find another way to invest the rest. He promises not to buy crypto coins again and mentions that he knows a great team of shareholders who are specialized in ETFs and futures and their returns exceeded 100%, but Jun-hee accuses him of just looking for her money, Myung-gi tells her that it isn't true and that he wants to get enough money for them to have a good life, but Jun-hee asks her how much money he's talking about, Myung-gi goes blank and Jun-hee tells him to pay his debts with his own money and that she will use her own to raise the baby, she leaves and he goes after her.

Thanos, Nam-gyu and Min-su see Myung-gi and Jun-hee from a distance and think they are dating.

Hyun-ju feels depressed by Young-mi's death, Seon-nyeo approaches her and tells her not to be sad since she will soon join her in the afterlife, she curses the team for abandoning her and tells them that she prayed to the gods that they die there, swears that none of them will leave there alive and that they will have a miserable, painful death as they look at each other, Seon-nyeo leaves with a hellish smile and Geum-ja says that she isn't a shaman but a sick vixen and tells the team to cleanse themselves to prevent the curse from falling on them.

Jung-bae arrives with Gi-hun, In-ho and Dae-ho and tells Gi-hun that there are 55 players left who voted for "O", Gi-hun asks him if he's sure and Jung-bae says that he counted 2 times, Dae-ho asks him if he counted himself, Jung-bae realizes that he forgot and says that there are 56 players who voted for "O", so there are 44 players who voted for "X", the team thinks it will be difficult to win but In-ho tells them that if 6 "O" players vote for "X" it will be a tie and if 7 do, "X" will win, Dae-ho believes that the "X" players could also vote for "O" but In-ho believes it unlikely because he believes that the players will want to leave even if the money is little, Jung-bae adds that he will vote for "X" and they will be tied if 5 "O" players vote for "X" and thus they can win. Gi-hun tells the team to go find people to convince them to vote for "X" but In-ho thinks they could mess with players who want to continue playing and make them not stop, Gi-hun and In-ho argue about what to do to win the vote when the guards arrive and it is announced that out of 255, 155 were eliminated and 100 managed to win the third game.

On the boat, Jun-ho and his team continue searching with the drone when they see something that looks like a door, they cannot distinguish what it is since the trees are in the way and they proceed to go themselves to see it.

The Prize money has increased to ₩35,600,000,000 (being ₩356,000,000 for each player), Jung-bae believes that it's enough money for some to change from "O" to "X", Dae-ho says that they need 6 more people and that if there are 7, they will win. The vote begins and is carried out in reverse order of the players' numbers, so Gi-hun is the first because he's Player 456, then it's announced that to guarantee a democratic election, any type of disruption is prohibited.

Gi-hun passes to vote and votes for "X", starting the voting 1-0, the vote advances and the players are divided between Team X and Team O. Jung-bae passes to vote, he votes for "X" and becomes the first person to change his vote. Dae-ho passes to vote and he also votes for "X". Se-mi passes to vote, she also votes for "X" and becomes the second person to change her vote, which annoys Thanos and Nam-gyu.

No-eul returns with the soldiers to their rooms and Number 005 tells her that if she had helped, she wouldn't have scratched her face.

The vote reaches the halfway point and Player 232 votes for "O", making it 23-27, Thanos passes to vote, he votes for "O" (giving a kiss to the button) and encourages the players to vote for "O". The vote progresses and several players remain loyal to their teams, when Player 185's turn comes, she thinks about her decision, she finally votes for "X" and and becomes the third person to change her vote. Geum-ja's turn comes and she tells her son that if he does the stupidity of voting for "O" again, she will hang herself, Yong-sik tells his mother that he won't do it again and that she pass go vote, Geum-ja passes to vote, votes for "X" and Player 145 passes to vote. Thanos tells Min-su that he wants to play just one more game and Nam-gyu assures him that he convinced Min-su to play one more game and leave that place. Min-su's turn comes and Nam-gyu pressures him to vote for "O" while Se-mi sees what Nam-gyu is doing and she shows that imbecile the middle finger. Min-su's fear makes it difficult for him to choose, but he finally decides to do what Se-mi told him, he votes for "X" and becomes the fourth person to change his vote, much to the joy of Gi-hun's team. Nam-gyu gets shocked to see Min-su protecting himself from them and votes for "O" while Se-mi is happy that Min-su stood up for himself. Hyun-ju passes to vote, votes for "X" (for Young-mi) and becomes the fifth person to change her vote, much to the joy of Gi-hun's team and Geum-ja gives Hyun-ju a hug.

Jun-ho goes with several of his men to check the island while Woo-seok, Captain Park and the Drone pilot see them with the drone, Jun-ho and his men find the door and one of the men tries to open it, but when he does an explosion occurs, revealing that it's a trap.

The vote is nearing the end and is tied 47-47. Player 024 votes for "O" and it becomes 47-48, much to the joy of Team O. Han-nam passes to vote and thinks for a moment about his decision, then he votes for "X" and becomes the sixth person to change his vote, much to the joy of Team X and it becomes 48-48, which makes Gi-hun's team believe they can go home. Player 009 passes to vote and thinks for a moment about her decision, then she votes for "O" and it becomes 48-49, much to the joy of Team O, Gi-hun's team don't worry since 009 had already voted for "O". Yong-sik passes to vote and Jung-bae asks Geum-ja if her son would vote for "X" to which the old woman promises that he will, then Yong-sik votes for "X" and becomes the seventh person to change his vote, much to the joy of Team X and the vote becomes 49-49, Yong-sik excitedly yells that everyone can go home and his mother agrees with him. Gi-hun's team sees that only In-ho and Mi-hwa are left and they both voted for "X". Mi-hwa passes to vote and Dae-ho thinks that they will win, but then Jung-bae remembers what In-ho did to Jae-seok and decides to tell Gi-hun, but then Mi-hwa votes for "O" (since she has become loyal to Seon-nyeo) and it becomes 49-50, much to the joy of Team O.

In-ho passes to vote, Dae-ho tells him to finish with everything and tells the team that it would be 50-50, In-ho stands thinking in front of the buttons and Jung-bae tells the team that he scares him a little, Dae-ho asks him why and then Jung-bae decides to tell them what happened in Room 33... but then In-ho votes for "X" and he ends the vote in a 50-50 tie, much to the joy and relief of Team X and In-ho gives the team an OK sign, showing that he kept his word.

The Manager announce that with In-ho's vote, the voting has ended, then Jeong-dae tells him that they are tied and asks what will happen, to which the Manager tells him that the vote will be held again, Kwon Byeong-su asks him when the vote will be held again and the Manager tells him that the vote will be the next day so that they have time to think and suggests that the players think about their future.

On the boat, the man who opened the door died and another was injured, Jun-ho and the others put the dead man in a body bag with ice and put him below deck while the injured man receives first aid. Captain Park suggests returning to land, they remind him that they must find The Island before the games end and he says that the injured man should go to the hospital, the injured man says that he's fine and and his injuries are put under control, Captain Park mentions that there is a dead man, but the others decide to continue searching so that their fallen companion can rest in peace. Woo-seok tells Jun-ho that if the masked men set booby traps, then they know their whereabouts, Jun-ho announces that from that moment on, the radio frequency will be changed every day and the use of cell phones will be prohibited, the men understand and Jun-ho tells Captain Park to tell the other boat.

In the Dormitory, the room has been divided between Team X and Team O, players receive their food (kimbap with a metal fork and a soda bottle) and eat. Gi-hun's team sits down to eat and decides to do what Gi-hun said about convincing the "O" Players to vote for "X", Yong-sik questions if it will work since it seems that Team O lost their minds for the money, but Geum-ja thinks that Team X has the advantage since the food is very bad, so everyone will be hungry the next day and people start to miss home when they are hungry. Yong-sik asks Team O if they don't regret their decision because of the little food and tells them that if just 1 of them joins Team X, they can go and eat Korean beef, But then Jeong-dae says that if all the Xs die in the next game, they will receive 800 million won each, and with that amount you can buy a cattle ranch, Dae-ho gets up from his seat and says that they will all die if they don’t stop playing and then Yeong-sam said that we will see who dies and stop running like a rat, and then Dae-ho is about to hit him but Jung-bae stops him and in anger, Dae-ho shows his marine tattoo, to which Team O laughed and Kim Yeong-sam says that he is a special forces soldier don't believing him, and then Seung-won gets up from his seat and shouts towards X that if they want to leave, it’s easier for them to starve than to stuff kimbap into their mouths, and then Jung-bae starts to get angry and Dae-ho starts to stop him. Both teams start arguing and yelling at each other as Team X wants to leave and Team O wants to stay and they almost start fighting. Gi-hun, meanwhile, opens his food rations and sees the fork, Gi-hun inspects the fork and realizes that there will be a riot that night.

In the men's bathroom, Min-su hides from Thanos and Nam-gyu inside one of the cubicles and they try to intimidate him so that he changes his vote. Fortunately Myung-gi arrives and defends Min-su. Myung-gi asks Team X for help and tells them that Thanos and Nam-gyu are threatening Min-su to join them. Team X comes to help and accuses Thanos and Nam-gyu for cheating. Thanos asks Team O for help and declares that Team X wants to attack them, leading to his teammates arriving to support him and Nam-gyu. Min-su leaves the cubicle and hides among Team X, Thanos tells Min-su to come here but Myung-gi gets in the way. Then Thanos and Nam-gyu mention Jun-hee, with the latter making fun of her for being pregnant. Myung-gi gets angry and tells them not to mess with her, leading to Thanos threatening to cut his finger off and ask her out. Myung-gi and Thanos start fighting and a fight breaks out between the Team X and Team O, giving Min-su the chance to escape to the dormitory. Thanos pummels Myung-gi and then starts to strangle him, telling him that he's going to take his money, Jun-hee, and his life and they all belong to him but Myung-gi manages to stab him in the throat with his fork.

Trivia[]

  • This episode features the Mingle game and the Bathroom Fight.
  • On January 7, 2025 Lee Byung-hun teased that in one scene during this episode would show the clearest depictions of all three of his personas in one scene. He also mentioned that initially, he was not part of the promotional materials for the newest season.[1]
  • The typical color of the title cards is only white, however, in this episode, a special title card is featured. In the episode's title card, the "O" color is blue and "X" color is red, representing the colors of the buttons the players have to press during the voting.
  • Upon close inspection of the final round of Mingle, the main characters running away in duos from their group are shown out of order and with repeated departures. In the shot when the announcement of "Two" is declared, in the last second before the frame changes, Myung-gi can already be seen reaching for Jun-hee.
