Let's keep searching. He's never gonna rest in peace until we kill the bastards who did this.

Kim to Hwang Jun-ho's team in "O X"

Kim is a mercenary who was hired as part of a strike force to find and take down the Squid Games.

History[]

Kim is an experienced and battle-hardened soldier who had seen extensive combat overseas, formerly serving in the Korean Armed Forces. After his military service, he went on to become a mercenary for hire, also becoming acquainted with Seoul-based gangster Choi Woo-seok at some point.

Finding the Squid Games[]

Determined to find and put a stop to the Squid Games competition, Seong Gi-hun instructed Woo-seok to find experienced men who could help them; he contacted and hired Kim alongside several other ex-soldiers from the Marines, Special Forces, and UDT. Kim was selected as the team leader due to his extensive experience and was introduced to Gi-hun, who explained the plan to ambush an arranged meeting with the Games' organisers.

Kim and the rest of the mercenaries lied in wait in two vans while Gi-hun and Woo-seok entered a nightclub to meet the organisers, though Gi-hun was separated and took off in a limousine. Hwang Jun-ho ordered the two teams to follow him and hijack the vehicle, but both of the vans were disabled when a sniper shot out their tires; Gi-hun promptly decided to re-join the games after realising their plan had failed.

With Gi-hun missing, the rest of the strike force enacted their "Plan B", where they would follow the GPS signal of a tracker inside a fake dental implant Gi-hun had installed. Boarding a boat captained by Park Yeong-gil, the team followed the tracker to a craggy island and landed ashore, where they found a lone man fishing by the coast. Kim held him at gunpoint while Woo-seok worriedly searched for the tracker, soon finding it in the man's bucket of fish bait and revealing the Squid Games staff were onto them.

The strike force was later split up into two teams on separate boats manned by Captains Park and Ko respectively. Using a drone to search the many coastal islands, they eventually spot a door-shaped structure on one of them, and disembark ashore to investigate it further. Kim led the team towards the door, but when a mercenary opened it they set off a trip-wired bomb planted by the Squid Games staff, killing one merc and injuring another. Back on the boat, the injured man's injuries were treated and they discussed what to do next, deciding to continue on with their mission and change radio frequencies every day, despite Captain Park's insistence they return.

A few days later, the team awoke to discover their drone pilot had disappeared in the the night, returning to port to recruit a new pilot to help them continue the search. Even with the new operator, the team still failed to find the island, and were rapidly running out of time as the games approached the end of its five-day duration.

One night, the mercenaries were all enjoying ramen and talking together in the boat's cabin, having narrowed down their search to one of two areas within the map's boundaries. As they ate, Captain Park walked across the deck and caught a mercenary's attention, asking if he wanted some ramen also, which he obliged. Suddenly, Park immediately unveiled an MP5A3 and opened fire on the team, revealing himself to be a mole for the Squid Games the whole time. Park killed the entire team until Kim was the only one left standing, injured by a shot to the leg. He crawled towards his assault rifle but was stopped by Park, who demanded to know where Jun-ho was, to which Kim answered "Behind you." Jun-ho then fired a speargun into Park's heart and fatally wounded him, but even in the face of death he refused to tell them where the island was and soon died.

Jun-ho patched up Kim's wounds and told him they had to find the island before it was too late, but Kim summarised that Team Two on Captain Ko's boat had also been killed, making it impossible for the two of them to search every nearby island in time. Jun-ho went back to their map and realised the island had to be in an area Park had intentionally marked as pointless to search, so they set off to find it.

Along the way, the two intercepted and saved escaping player Park Gyeong-seok from a group of pursuing Pink Guards, gunning them down from the bow of their boat with assault rifles. After learning from Gyeong-seok that the island was nearby, they headed towards it and eventually found it, having also notified the Coast Guard as well who were on the way. Kim stayed with Gyeong-seok while Jun-ho dived underwater to the island's entrance, but he ultimately failed to rescue Gi-hun and any more of the players, as the island was rigged with explosive charges to erase any evidence of the Games' existence. After the island was destroyed by the charges, Kim was presumably picked up by the Coast Guard with Jun-ho and Gyeong-seok and returned to Seoul.
