Icons at the initial chaos of Red Light, Green Light.
The portrait grids, commonly referred to as "icons," serve as a visual representation of the players' statuses in the competition. Each player has an icon that appears on the screen, indicating whether they are still in the game or have been eliminated. When a player is killed, their icon blackens out, symbolizing their elimination from the game.
History[]
The icons are a form of identification for each player in the games, each photo is taken after the player signs a contract and is usually told to smile, just to feel safe and earn the trust of the workers, and once the player has their photo taken, it will appear in the control room with their assigned number on the bottom of each photo.
During the games, when a player is killed or in this case, eliminated, their icon blacks out, indicating their elimination. However, there is a mistake of some icons either being duplicates of each other, a player's icon being different from the actual player, reappearing after elimination, or disappearing before elimination.
Mistakes[]
Season 1[]
- Player 196’s icon displays to be a woman, despite being a man.
- Though Player 329 died during the Special Game, he was previously shown to be eliminated in Red Light, Green Light due to his icon disappearing.
- Player 362, Player 153, Player 056, Player 077, Player 128, Player 307, Player 400, Player 220, Player 114, Player 046 and Player 112’s icons disappear during the initial chaos that occurred as a result of Player 324’s death, though they all died during the "Fly Me to the Moon" montage.
- Player 201’s icon disappeared during Sugar Honeycombs, even though he was part of the winning Team Six and ultimately died in Marbles.
- Byeong-gi’s icon shows an old man rather than his actual face, likely a continuity error. The true Player 111 was portrayed by Yoo Sung-joo. While the other Player 111’s icon was portrayed by an unknown extra.
- Some of the player icons are blatant copies of the same person, such as with the icons of Player 074 and Player 353, as well as Player 201 and Player 327. This, and the above mistakes listed, are likely continuity errors caused by the difficulty in keeping track of so many players.
- Player 151 shows a completely different man while in reality it should be Moon Jung-dae this mistake is corrected in glass bridge but out of all the semifinalists his icon is the very last to be corrected.
- Player 032 is the only Jang Deok-su's gang members who's faulty icon is an opposite gender , a woman instead of man
Season 2[]
- During the initial chaos in Red Light, Green Light with the icons disappearing, Player 163's icon can be seen in place of Player 043's icon.
- During the third round of Mingle, Player 164's icon is seen fading away. After that, she is seen unharmed getting out of a room.
Trivia[]

- Even though the Squid Game competitions of 2020 and 2024 have the same amount of players, the layout of the player grids have differences as seen with the image comparing the two grids.
- Player 260 and Player 390’s icons appear identical at first glance. However, upon closer inspection, there are key differences between their backgrounds. In Player 260’s icon on the wall, his background and shadow are clearly visible, while Player 390’s icon, though it resembles Player 260, lacks a shadow in its background.
- Player 093 is shown in Player 194’s team, but when Team Two and Team Three’s icon starts to disappear, Player 093’s icon wasn’t gone along with Player 194’s team, meaning that Player 093 is in either Team Six or Team Eight.
