Why would I? The players up here tried to kill us at every chance.

Do Jung-soo telling the remaining players why he didn't reveal the correct glass tiles earlier in "VIPS"

Do Jung-soo (도정수 Do Jeong-su?)[4], also known as Player 017, was a former glass manufacturer and contestant in the 33rd Squid Game in 2020.

History[]

Do Jung-soo was born on June 23, 1965, in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. He eventually graduated from Bucheon Industrial High School[5]. He was the husband of Kim Eun-sook, and the father of two daughters, Do Hi-jye and Do Ji-yeon. He was an ex-glass manufacturer who was fired for drunk driving. Eventually, he was put in heavy debt and chose to enter a high-risk competition to win money.

After waking up in a large room with 455 other people, he signed a contract and took his photo. He managed to survive the first game, Red Light Green Light, after most of the contestants had been eliminated. Afterwards, like everyone else, he was shaken by the deaths of the eliminated contestants, when the prize money was finally revealed. A vote was held for if the game should continue, but the majority voted no. However, those who were willing to return did so, and he returned along with most of the other players.

He managed to survive the second game, Sugar Honeycombs, the third game, Tug of War, and beat his partner, Player 413, in the fourth game, Marbles. He managed to survive until the fifth game, Glass Stepping Stones. For this game, he chose the number 13, which meant he would be the thirteenth player to go.

Death[]

Player 017 Death

Do Jung-soo being pushed off by Cho Sang-woo to his death

During Glass Stepping Stones, he could differentiate between the tempered glass and the regular glass based on the refraction of the light, gained from his experience of being a glass manufacturer. Despite this, he chose to keep this information to himself and waited until all players in front of him were dead to tell the remaining players behind him about his skill, fearing to be killed by the others if he had revealed it earlier.

When it was his turn, he finally used his strategy to get to the last glass panel before the lights were turned off. He used the marble of Player 456 to try and tell through the sound that it made, and wanted another one to hear the other panel just in case. However, time was running out, and Player 218 pushed him off the bridge to his death for taking too long guessing the last glass panel. Placing him 4th in the entire competition.

Trivia[]

  • It is true that he could have saved himself if he used the marble first on his glass panel, and then on either panel in front of him to see if they made the same/different sound. However, there is a high likelihood that the sound of his own panel would have been different due to that he was standing on it and thus creating tension in the glass' structure.
  • On his player file, Do Jung-soo's name is romanized as Do Jeong-soo instead, even though he is credited differently everywhere else. The reason for this inconsistency is unknown.
  • There is a continuity error in VIPS where he is listed as Player 087 instead of Player 017.
