I want to believe you. Really, I do. But we didn’t get any of the photos you said you’d sent, then your phone fell into the ocean. And you still can’t find this island of yours. You said people got murdered in those secret games. To get the higher-ups to buy that story, you need to show some evidence, Jun-ho. There was the round stuck in your shoulder, but we couldn’t trace the bullet. That’s all you had.
Chief Kim telling Hwang Jun-ho why he can’t convince the higher-ups of his story in "Bread and Lottery"
Chief Kim is a police chief in Seoul who worked as Hwang Jun-ho's boss during his time as a police detective.
History[]
2020[]
After Hwang Jun-ho escapes the island and calls his chief, he picks up and yells, asking where he has been. Jun-ho begs him to send a police backup to his location, but he is unable to decipher his words due to the call breaking up.
2024[]
Chief Kim spots Jun-ho handing out tickets as a traffic officer and calls him, questioning if he transferred just to endure mistreatment. During lunch, Chief Kim tries to persuade Jun-ho to return to his former position as a detective in the Major Crimes Division. Their conversation shifts to the Squid Game island, where the chief reveals that he tried to convince the higher-ups of Jun-ho’s story and even got the coast guard to search for the island. He admits that he wants to believe Jun-ho but explains that without the evidence Jun-ho claimed to have sent while on the island, his story isn’t credible. Chief Kim confesses that the department had wanted to fire Jun-ho, but he went out of his way to stop it. Before their conversation ends, the chief asks Jun-ho if he really doesn’t remember who shot him. Jun-ho lies, claiming he doesn’t.
Later, Jun-ho visits Chief Kim at the police station to ask for his help in searching for the island after Gi-hun returned to the games. The chief yells at him, berating Jun-ho for resigning without telling him and disappearing. He reveals that he begged the department to list it as a leave of absence rather than a resignation. Frustrated, he asks Jun-ho what more he could possibly do for him, and takes him to a higher-up.
During the meeting, Jun-ho warns the higher-up that Gi-hun and the others are in imminent danger, urging that they have to act quickly. However, the higher-up dismisses Jun-ho, telling Chief Kim that he’s beyond help now and to process his resignation. The chief protests, chasing after the higher-up and promising that he’ll ensure Jun-ho returns to therapy.
